orange glad july 2015 review

Everything in our July boxes! All the desserts I have ever received have been perfectly packaged, which is remarkable, because they are all fragile and perishable but the packaging is truly excellent (this would also make a great gift).

orange glad july 2015 shortbread

McTavish Shortbread Ice Cream Shortbread

Brandy: I don’t know why I felt compelled to take this out of its package for the photo, but I did. It looked fun and I was really excited when I saw that it was shortbread! And not just shortbread – McTavish shortbread. It was sure to be good with such a Scottish name!

Alena :This adorable cookie was very tasty! I know it is shortbread, but I really wanted it to be soft. It was extremely good and the cookie itself is adorable!

Tom:  Nice clean shortbread flavor.  The speckle decorations are colorful but not highly flavored, so they don’t kill the delicate flavor of the cookie.

orange glad july 2015 biscottiDarling Gourmet Goodies Vagabond Biscotti – Vanilla biscotti with Belgian white chocolate and toasted hazelnuts

Alena: I just had one of these for breakfast (shhh…Don’t tell my husband) with my coffee. I love the white chocolate inside along with the hazelnuts. I am a huge hazelnut fan, so these were delicious!

Brandy: The thing that struck me when I pulled this out was that I could tell how it was made – I received 4 slices that were sequential in order. Biscotti always seems so sterile to me but this was much more… artisan maybe?

Tom:  Has that great crunchy, dry texture that makes biscotti so good with coffee.  I didn’t see a lot of the white chocolate in my half of the bag, but the hazelnut was bountiful.  The vanilla flavor stood out, but the real surprise was the nice, hearty flavor of the biscotti, perhaps from the organic flour.  It had a more engaging texture and richer flavor than most biscotti.  Good size too — wasn’t mini or jumbo.

Brandy: I took the end pieces and they had plenty of white chocolate flavor and hazelnuts. Whoops! Sorry dear.

orange glad july 2015 blondie

Greyston Bakery Brown Sugar Blondie

Brandy: This is really interesting because Greyston Bakery has an “Open Hiring Policy,” which means they hire anyone that walks through their door looking for work – and provide employment readiness training, child care, and community development. And they bake with renewable energy and sustainable materials.

Alena: SWEET! Thats my one word for this blondie! I had a sweet tooth last night (when don’t I?) and had a few bites of this. It was good, but not my favorite!

Tom:  This had a really different profile than what I expected.  Most blondies are dry and crumbly, but this one captured the moist gooeyness of a fudge browny without the chocolate (save the chips).  It was extremely moist, and very sweet — the texture and flavor reminded me of sweet, buttery egg custard as much as it did a bakery item.  Nice and decadent.

Brandy: This was SO good. I tasted it when Tom did, and we sort of fought over it. It was definitely custardy and a big winner.

The Art of Caramel Artisanal Carameled Popcorn – Bananas Foster with Dark Rum

Alena: My husband was SO excited about these, until I read him the name. He’s such a plain guy, he was disappointed, but I love Bananas Foster! These stay fresh (sometimes caramel popcorn gets soggy) and tasted JUST like Bananas Foster. I would rather have ice cream with my bananas foster, but these are delicious as well!

Tom:  I popped some of these in my mouth before reading the description, and the banana scent and flavor was immediately in the fore, followed by the brown sugar and rum coating.  Sweet and crunchy, these have the qualities of a great caramel corn, plus a unique flavor to mix it up.  Really tasty, even if banana is not your jam.

A Couple of Squares Raspberry Jam Shortbread

Alena: Last, but not least the Raspberry Jam Shortbread. I love cookies with jam inside but this didn’t do it for me. I liked it, but didn’t love it!

Tom:  I liked this one a lot.  The jam was as expected, and the cookie was really good.  It was tender and had a little bend to it — it’s hard to get a packaged shortbread that is not either crunchy or cake-y.  I liked that it did not have the floury taste found in many artisan shortbreads.

Brandy:  So there’s that! I forgave him because I knew he has no self-control.

Orange Glad has a nice variety of sweets and enough creativity in their selections to keep you out of the chocolate chip cookie rut.  Fresh, artisan baked goods really satisfy the sweet tooth in a way candy cannot.  Also, FYI, everything in the box had a within 3 months best buy date – except for the Blondie, which was a week! If you don’t have someone to share with across the interwebs and only do it in person, don’t forget you can do double sweets for an extra $12!
