I always look forward to receiving my Blue Bottle Coffee, because I know I will have dependably delicious coffee, no matter the profile of the current selection.  Blue Bottle Coffee is a coffee subscription with multiple options to suit your coffee needs. Generally you’ll get 12 oz of beans every other week for $17, or double your bag for an extra $11. They also offer half bag and triple bag subscriptions. The prices vary by a buck or so on your coffee selections. You can try Blue Bottle Coffee free – just look for the “Try It Free” button.

A few months ago Blue Bottle announced they have acquired Perfect Coffee, a coffee subscription that has apparently stopped time and has developed a magic method of grinding beans that never get old, but we haven’t heard anything more about that yet.

This month I received Colombia Popayan Winter Harvest. I have the Origins subscription, but it’s easy to switch between the 3 types (Origins, Blend, Espresso) or one of the 8 specialty subscriptions available, as well as change the frequency and amount of coffee you receive in each shipment. I like that I receive a different single-origin coffee every time with this subscription.  I find you can discover some really fantastic flavor profiles that tend to get lost in a blend.  I’ve had Blue Bottle Coffee blends (and espresso, though I prepared it as normal coffee) before, and they are selected and prepared with the same degree of mindfulness, though you will miss out on some of the delightful “rough edges” of the single-origin brews.

Blue Bottle Coffee‘s Description:

This coffee was harvested in winter by APROCEP: a group of around 100 producers, mostly women, who farm outside the Colombian city of Popayán. The coffee is grown, picked and processed by individual farmers and, while their properties are modestly sized at 3-5 hectares, their processing infrastructure is impressively advanced. APROCEP is a farmer-managed organization. Members are able to sell their best coffees (to us!), and the rest is sold collectively, mostly through local channels. The group is both tight-knit and supportive of individual members pursuing their own achievements. We recommend celebrating this spirit of community by brewing up a cup for a nearby pal!

Blue Bottle Coffee‘s notes:  Fruit punch, floral, sweet pepper.blue bottle july 2015 colombia poayan winter harvest

My Notes:  This is an atypical flavor profile that is very pleasant to drink.  BB’s flavor notes make it sound odd, but it feels very natural when drinking it.  Upon grinding, the beans smelled very dark and strong, and I was expecting them to generate a bitter brew.  Instead, the brewed coffee has a palpable sweetness and very approachable flavor.  The fruit punch flavor is particularly evident once it has cooled slightly.  The floral and sweet pepper descriptions are fair attempts to capture the essence of the coffee.  There are several esters that have a slightly floral character, but the heavy lifting is done with the fruit punch (really that deep, sweet flavor you get when you mix grape, apple, and berry juices together), and the roasted vegetable flavor (mellow, hearty sweetness that develops when you roast light-flavored veggies – tubers, bell peppers, celery, etc — no broccoli, garlic, onion, etc.) — caramelization, not caramel.
