Five Four Club is a men’s clothing monthly subscription club – sign up, pick a style profile and your sizes, and get clothes every month. My style profile is a “mix.” This subscription ships at the end of the month, and nearly always arrives in the first few days of the next month. Until recently Five Four Club was a retail brand, but now you must be a member in order to purchase clothes in their shop.

3 pieces arrived in May’s Five Four package, all of them the wrong size. I did a return and they misunderstood what size they were supposed to set things at. Whoops! It’s alright, they have free exchanges for size, you just get a label from them and they pay the return shipping and send you new stuff. I took a few photos of these items, but have the photos of the new May package below.

I received:

Calvin Jacket ($98):  This is a Carhart-style barn jacket made of sturdy material.  I liked this piece and wish it were sized properly.

Belshire Shirt ($60) (The blue one):  This is a nice sport short in a pretty periwinkles-blue.  I thought it was cool-looking that the horizontal and vertical stripes that make up the checker-board pattern are different colors, giving it the simultaneous appearance of both a striped and a checkered shirt.

Barnard Shirt ($68):  The subdued colors make this piece office-appropriate, but it also has some nice accents — the Five Four collar rim and striped liner.  Collar is a dress collar, too, so it can be worn more readily with a tie (sport collars always look a little strained when dressed up with a tie).

The jacket had some great details so it was a bummer to return this shipment.  I liked the angled zipper pockets, and you can see the cool striped liner that sets the jacket apart from the work-wear pieces it otherwise resembles.

Here’s my replacement shipment:

As you can see, all the pieces are different from the last batch.  IMG_1520

Five Four has made some movement toward more recognizably branding their clothing (aside from the graphic tees that usually are unmistakably Five Four).  All three pieces have the simple black and white stripe, and the jacket features the pattern on the interior lining as well.IMG_1508

Parkside ($84):  This has a water-resistant feel to it, though I don’t think it is a true water-proof jacket.  The hood has a draw string, and the collar buttons up in such a way that it sets up against the bottom of your chin.IMG_1522

Pockets are non-closure, but have top-access square pockets and angled hand-warming pockets built on top.IMG_1523

A single, sturdy mesh ribbon (in Five Four branded pattern) is looped through each button.  Absent a shattered button, these things aren’t coming off.  Also notice the interior chest pocket and striped lining.

Enslow ($55):  This slightly flared button-up features “hidden” buttons — an additional panel covers the buttons, though their outline shows through due to the nature of the fabric.  It is very thin, and any surface proving constant abrasion easily fades the fabric.  Curiously, there is no pocket on the chest.  This and the hidden buttons combine to provide a smooth, sleek impression.  IMG_1521

This is a shot of the button enclosure on the Enslow (the color on this photo is terrible – it’s navy like in the first 2 photos).

Caspian ($60):  much thicker fabric and a more traditional pocket and button format adorn the Caspian.

I frequently mention the gentrification of Five Four’s overall style.  These two collections feature pieces you could easily wear to work at all but the most staunchly “business attire” workplaces.
