This is my upgraded Birchbox for June – Birchbox now offers an option for an extra $20 per month to get 2 full-size products in addition to your regular box.   Birchbox is normally$10 a month, plus you accumulate points after reviewing the items in your box! You’ll get 10 points per item reviewed, and 100 points are equal to $10 in the shop.

Next Stop: Adventure! There were three different box designs this month, in addition to the curated design (see the Tig “Ready Set Summer” Guest Editor box and which subscribers could purchase for $10).  For July you can

All the items, including the full-size ones.birchbox upgrade box review june 2015 IMG_5630

Here are my upgrade items. I can’t say I was terribly impressed.

Mally Liquid Face Defender Blush ($30, but all over ebay for $12 and not available anywhere but Mally & Birchbox – formerly sold at Ulta, QVC, everywhere) I actually loved the silky smooth application of this, and thought it might be a new product, but it appears it was a closeout item. If I wanted a closeout item I would’ve purchased it on ebay.

Smith & Cult Polish – Stockholm Syndrome ($18) This is a fun purply greige, but I absolutely despise the lid. It’s huge and makes my hand hurt. This is a fail for me.

Pretty, but when Birchbox told me I would get hot new items, I didn’t expect them to be closeouts.

I saw these TempleSpa hair products and thought, hmmm, hotel Shampoo & Conditioner ($3.50 together). Indeed, they’re manufactured by Gilcrest & Soames. I don’t like getting hotel brands in my Birchbox.

Pura Vida Lace Headband ($2.25)

Tocca Eau de Parfum, Bianca ($3.20)

Dr. Jart+ Dermaclear Micro Water ($2.56) Made with 85 percent active hydrogen mineral water to remove makeup and brighten skin

Marcelle Mini Waterproof Eyeliner ($7.30) I received both of these in my regular June Birchbox – read the review for a swatch!

I wasn’t impressed with my upgrade items at all – especially as the Smith & Cult went out I think 2 months ago. By my calculations, because of the closeout price on the Mally, my box was only $49. For an extra $20 (and a promised $50 in value), that fell short (and they really rubbed it in with hotel toiletries!). Do you think I’m being harsh?

I don’t think you’re being harsh at all. I would have been really mad about it. “Upgrade”?! Overall, this whole box would have been a disappointment for me. I do like the headband. 🙂

I have been so upset with this upgrade. I really expected more from Birchbox, I’m probably going to end up canceling the upgrade. I recieved the nail polish in pink a few months ago and this month I got another mascara. I have gotten a mascara every month since I started this, it kind of ridiculous and everyone with the upgrade is getting the Smashbox one this month which I already have.

I feel the need to review it (I actually signed up for it when it came out, but that particular account was on a gift subscription, so it didn’t start until this month). But as a regular person would I buy it? No way. I would add on the curated box, I would drop $250 a year at Sephora, anything but the upgrade.

You aren’t being harsh at all, I canceled my BB Man and Woman boxes both this month due to declining value, and other issues like products that don’t fit the profile. So annoyed that this new box (last one) for husband coming up has 4 items, not even five to eek out those last 10 points for the fifth item. Three of the four add up to maybe $8 and the lifestyle item is $24, but is not a great item. I think they are so big and popular now they no longer have fun injected in the box, it’s all just small samples stuffed in with little curation. Bigger and better (and no hotel shampoos) samples from Sephora or Ulta or Nordstrom etc…so that further irks me. I have been so happy with Glossybox (going on 3.5 years with only a few dud type products) and Dermstores Beauty Fix, I’ll stick with those unless they decline.

Yes we have definitely noticed the downgrade in the Birchbox Man. Lots of Quirky (as in the brand) items, not too much other stuff. My guess is that the brands going into the box aren’t getting as big of a return on the investment. I forgot to pick up the June BeautyFix – I think I need to resubscribe. I actually quit reviewing Glossybox and only post spoilers because they won’t send me a review box early AND my personal box invariably gets here into the next month, so there’s no reason for me to review it. I did get the February box though because it was so cute!

My husband generally enjoys Birchbox Man because he gets a lot of cologne samples (he is really into it!) so we’re still getting that one but obviously for the money Bespoke Post is going to win every time – and the average dude just doesn’t need that many samples. Oh and also I get his review points to spend in the shop because it’s on my account. 🙂
