The March Koala Crate theme was Bugs! Koala Crate is a monthly subscription box from KiwiCo for preschoolers ages 3 to 4. Koala Crate was created to encourage hands-on learning and fun. Activities are designed to be developmentally appropriate and enriching while also engaging, fun, and universally appealing.
Whoops! This post was scheduled for a few weeks ago and it looks like it missed the schedule.
A Koala Crate box comes with a variety of supplies to create a project, perform activities, and fun games, all geared for preschool.
There are two books that will come in your Koala Crate. The first is the instructions & inspiration book. This gives an overview of all the items in the crate, the 3 primary activities, and the messiness level and required grownup assistance needed.
Every activity tells you the required materials, engagement questions to ask your child, step by step instructions, and play ideas.
Imagine! magazine is “a play and learn magazine” made for you and your preschooler to explore together. My son loves it!
There’s a fun story to help introduce your child to the theme of the box.
A movement activity and poem/story.
Plus a variety of finding activities and other games! The games always have a simple premise, but they invite further exploration — my son grabbed crayon and got to work on tracing the maze, and we were able to reinforce counting, colors, and even work in some discussion on animal building habits.
Bug Dress Up: I was shocked and totally delighted to see what a natural he was with symmetry. Koala Crate is great at taking an art project and turning it into a reusable play set. Once the kids get immersed in the crate’s subject matter through the activities and projects, they usually are good for several hours of self-directed imaginative play afterwards.
Bug Matching Game: I thought it was cool that no two bugs matched exactly, so my son didn’t get hung up on there being only one correct match for each card — instead, we explored the subtle differences between otherwise alike cards and had fun reinforcing color, shape, same/different recognition, and descriptive facility.
Bug Eye Viewer: My son wasn’t too keen on this — he gets easily weirded out by the strangest things. I know my daughter will love it, though, and its a pretty solidly-constructed viewer.
My kids just love capes and playing pretend dress-up, so this will get some heavy use. This was a really great craft and my son was able to do the cape without much help at all. FYI, since I had an email about it, info on his shirt here.
