Pley is a LEGO rental subscription service, like Netflix for Lego Sets! My son adores building and we enjoyed our first month, so we decided to continue the subscription. We waited for quite some time – I didn’t realize the $9.99 per month plan allowed only one set. I guess it’s really like Netflix! See the update on the pricing structure below.

The items come in a self-sealing return envelope inside a mesh bag. There was no card noting the completeness of the set. There was, however, lamination on the outside of the booklet. I thought that was a good improvement.

This is what you see when you report a missing piece. There was no input for whether it came like that or we lost it (ahem).

You can purchase the sets if you just have to have them – this Lego Movie Cloud Cuckoo Palace set is $19.99. I think it’s more fun to build it, play with it, and return it. Plus, in this case it’s slightly cheaper on Amazon to buy a whole new set!

There are 3 different plans, and I chose the $9.99 plan. As I mentioned above you only get one set per month. That wasn’t clear to me when I subscribed. I found this updated plan chart that clearly shows the differences between the plans. Shipping is free and I thought the set arrived quickly even though I don’t get expedited shipping as part of my plan. I plan to make a note of my renewal dates and keep the sets as long as possible. Right now this is still a good value for us, and we don’t overload our house with Legos. I checked my “Pleylist” (the queue) and many of the sets look more like 30-40 on our queue. If they were all just $20, I’d probably get them. I may end up having to buy this one too, because my son is such a huge Lego Movie fan and he loves the minifigs. (Basically I just created a Lego monster!)

I thought this was a brilliant idea, until I tried it and my little guy got excited. Especially in the summer boredom months.
    – the sets take forever to ship. Right now he has been without a set for two weeks.
    – each month, even though we have 30+ sets in queue, we get an email telling us that they are totally out of sets and that we need to choose from a special list of about eight sets that they send to us with highly inferior options
    – every set we have gotten has been missing parts

I just lack the time to visit their website three times to ship one set of Legos.

Now, I have a crappy service and an unhappy kid. Don’t upset your child by trying Pley. They just don’t have their act together.
