Wine Awesomeness is an awesome wine club and it’s awesome because it’s also sort of like a subscription box – you’ll get 3 (or 6, depending on your choice) wines every month or every quarter, depending on how often you’d like to receive it. The 3 bottle box costs $45, and the 6 bottle box is $75. Currently I’m subscribed to the 3 bottle white (which includes sparkling and rosé) Wine Awesomeness Discovery Box.
Whoopsie. The packing company included the same wine twice, so more wine for us – the bottle that was supposed to be in the box arrived separately. Awesome customer service and proactive (I got an email about it before even receiving the first box).
The February Theme was Eastern Bloc Party, and this is where the awesomeness began. I didn’t get 3 “really good” bottles of wine, I got 3 really good bottles curated around a specific theme along with an introduction to the theme, very readable educational materials about all the grapes in this region, and page by page introductions to each wine.
These wines are probably a best kept secret!
Each wine information page includes the following:
- Wine Name
- Grape
- Location
- What you should do while drinking this wine (many tongue in cheek)
- What to eat with the wine
- What to listen to while you drink the wine
- Description
- Wine Bouquet
- Tasting Notes
- Recipe
Not only was this super informational, it helps you learn about wine in a really low key way if you don’t know a lot about it besides “I like wine.” I do enjoy all types of wine and have taken some great wine tasting classes but I do usually revert to an “I like wine” state.
This box comes with 3 bottles but I took the first 2 so we could start drinking them right away!
2013 Črnko Jaerninčan (Slovenia) This is described as a “kitchen sink” blend (includes riesling, sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, muscat) and I think it may be a local table wine. It was crisp and not too deep, light bodied, and really perfect. The suggested pairing was with thai noodles, so we comfortably paired it with tex-mex.
Törley Fortuna Muscat (Hungary) A sweet sparkling wine that we totally ate with Quinn Maple & Sea Salt popcorn and salami, which was a truly inspired choice. This was less sweet than I’d expected (but still a muscat!) and we loved the contrast with our snack.
2013 Bernreiter Grüner Veltliner (Austria) This grape has lime, mint, and white pepper flavors, and is super unique. This particular version is mildly fermented with wild yeast, so it’s almost like a lambic ale. It was interesting for sure with a light slightly fizzy body. We ate it with a cheesy dip but it would be great with the traditional schnitzel or fried chicken if you don’t have that (which is what the booklet suggested).
This was just a superlative box. I felt that it was perfectly curated and the wine prices for $15 per bottle including shipping were absolutely reasonable. I would have never selected these wines so this is a true discovery box. If you’re looking for only the very best Wine Spectator reds of the month, this isn’t your box, but if you’re looking for a fun wine experience, get this one. You should be able to order the March box through the 11th but you’ll receive it earlier if you order by the 27th. I am certain that I’m going to be upgrading to the full 6 bottle variety pack so I can experience every one of the wines on offer. That also a $15 savings and “I like wine.” 🙂

It seems shipping is now $22.50!
Yes it’s reflected in later reviews. It’s impossible to go back and change codes but you can always find up to date offers in the directory. That’s pretty much what it costs them to ship, but of. Course part of the box price later. I love WA. Like seriously. Love it.
I updated the post to reflect a shipping price increase. As everyone said, still a great deal, and it was a really excellent box.
Not sure if they’ve changed their prices, but my shipping cost was $20. Still a deal!
It must be lower now because when I open it in a new browser where I’m not logged in to WA it’s $15.
I loved your review, I signed up too. Shipping was $20 for me too.
I am going to check in on this!
