This post brought to you by Better Sleep Council. All opinions are 100% mine.

As most of you know, I’ve been busy redoing everything in my bedroom, from my vanity area, to my bathroom, and just the other day I purchased a headboard (I don’t have one!!) and brand new bedding.  I find that having a calm, organized, and pretty sanctuary reduces my stress levels and improves my sleep. And as I do in every room of my house, I use blackout shades, and that helps immensely with my sleep hygiene.

After gathering all the materials to make it look nice, I started to look at my mattress. It has a distinct dip where I sleep all scrunched up at the top on one side! Even though my mattress is a couple years old, I didn’t consider my sleeping style when purchasing. Oops! Everyone else says it’s so comfortable (including my kids that like to come pile in at night), but it’s not the right mattress for me, so I’m on the hunt for the perfect mattress for me and my husband! We do sleep on a King size bed, and that is absolutely the right choice for us!

May is Better Sleep Month and this year, the Better Sleep Council is telling everyone to Get on Top! Of a new mattress! And actually Memorial Day weekend is one of the best times to go hunting – great deals! Plus the Better Sleep Council is offering a Get on Top, win $1,000 giveaway and a giveaway for a $50 Visa gift card just for my readers! You can find all the details at the bottom of this post.

I know the difference that a new supportive mattress can make – I have been taking naps on my son’s new firm mattress, and I adore it. So if you are tossing and turning, no matter what kind of mattress you have, and you are blaming everything else for your sleep problems, it may be time to stop faking it with endless coffees in the morning or medication and night and invest in a new mattress. Maybe you don’t have enough room (can you believe my in-laws sleep on a full size bed? The Better Sleep Council’s a guide for how to get better sleep says that a full-size mattress is like each person only getting the room of a baby crib! (!!!!)

The Better Sleep Council’s guide on how to buy a mattress is super helpful, and includes the SLEEP test for helping you evaluate mattresses when you do go shopping (as well as the reminder not to wear a skirt or dress!). If I could ask a mattress expert anything, I’d ask about how to tell the difference between firm beds. I love my kids’ twin size beds, which are firm, but I find that my grandparent’s and my in-laws firm beds are hard as rocks, and I can’t move the next day after sleeping on them!  The other thing I’d really love to know is how to care for the new non-rotatable mattresses, or if I should perhaps be hunting for one that I can rotate, due to my bizarre sleep habits.

My sleeping troubles stem from my RA and Lupus. Having a comfortable mattress would help I’m sure. Thanks for the chance!

    • Brandy

This giveaway closed a year ago.

  • Dawn P.

Brandy, I just received an e-mail from Devin of Better Sleep Council telling me that I won the $50 VISA giveaway. I just wanted to thank you for sponsoring this contest. I’m so excited that I won. Plus I love your blog. Thanks so much!

    • Brandy

I’m excited that you won too! Congrats! It was a fun contest and honestly, I had no idea so many people were sleeping on such old mattresses!!! Hooray!!!!

  • janetfaye

A new mattress would be a big help in letting be feel more comfortable when I go to sleep. I toss and turn, and sometimes get up a lot trying to get comfortable on my mattress.

  • Colleen Boudreau

    My mattress hurts my back.

  • Crimmy Lynn

My husband snores, badly, and it keeps me awake. To make matters worse, I have depression and anxiety that affects my sleep, as well as chronic health issues and chronic back pain form scoliosis. We have a really nice mattress, in our bedroom, but it’s come down to us sleeping in different rooms so we can each have our space and deal with our sleep habits and issues. I sleep very lightly and the smallest noise and jostle of the bed will wake me up. So, therefore, a new mattress, in the spare room, would be a godsend! Thanks for the review and giveaway!

  • Dawn Milligan

I have back problems and I know my old matteress is not helping. Some nights i wake up a few times a night trying to get comfortable and I am a stay at home mommy so I need all the sleep I can get! Thanks for the review and giveaway!

  • Linda

My husband gets up numerous times every night (and wakes me up often doing so) and constantly complains about needing a new mattress because it’s not cushioned enough and very uneven. Our mattress is easily over 15 years old and a new mattress would let him (and me) get a better sleep!

  • Susan Christy

I can’t get comfortable on my current mattress – it sags in places and has lumps in other places, so I never get a good nights sleep.

  • laurie nykaza

I have 3 herniated disk and find it so hard to find a comfortable position and my old mattress so this would be wonderful to have

  • Susie King

I need a new mattress to help my back problems.

  • meredytheredyth

Our bed is too small and old. When my arthritis acts up, I can’t stretch out without hitting my spouse 🙁

  • Angela P (@angelatrenna)

My sleeping troubles are that my bed is way too firm.. I made the mistake of buying a memory foam mattress without ever trying it out online because it was a good price and had good reviews. It came and is way too firm and feels like I’m sleeping on the floor. I am so uncomfortable I’m waking up several times during the night. Unfortunately this is a nonreturnable item. I have 2 small children that are not in school yet and home with me all day long and they tire me out.. so when I get my rest I really need a good one.

  • Laurajj Jacobson

I toss and turn all night long trying to get comfortable in our bed with my back pain. Our mattress is older and has some spring coming thru so we have a mattress pad on top to help but its still not comfortable. I rarely get a good night sleep.

  • Krista W.

I have trouble sleeping through the night without waking up multiple times…. sometimes because of my cats, sometimes because of aches and pains!

  • Jennifer at Momsgotmail

I have a 10 year old mattress that is ready to be retired. I have a pinched nerve in my neck that prevents me from sleeping in all but one position, which strains my hip and shoulder because I am always sleeping in that one spot. I really need a new mattress!

  • Tabathia B

I have terrible back pain due to problems in a previous pregnancy and knee pain due to a fall and I can’t stay on my sides for long periods of time due to the lumpiness of my mattress

    tbarrettno1 at gmail dot com

  • tcarolinep

I have trouble sleeping due to back pain and our old mattress makes it worse. A good night sleep and a nice mattress are very much needed.

  • Amber Conaway

I toss and turn all night long from back/hip aches, I’ve even tried the pillow between the legs and doesn’t help lol totally putting a fund together to save up for a new mattress! I think having a new and better mattress would support my body better!

  • Emily L.

Our trouble is back pain/poor support. We seem to sleep in the same spots and really wear down a mattress.

  • Shellie Hoyt

I just don’t go to sleep early enough, lol! And I need a new memory foam – like mattress topper soon, since I keep sinking down and over toy hubby’s side. TO for the giveaway!

    • Shellie Hoyt

Or a new mattress, that would solve the problem. 😉

  • Leidy

My mattress is a little bit old and needs more cushion, this sometimes causes me discomfort when I sleep,A new mattress with the right cushion and support would help me sleep better.

  • efmystry

Both my hubby and I have sleeping issues, but I believe mine are more mattress-related than his. We are trying to make due with a queen size, but I think we’re going to have to save up for King! /: There are dips in our mattress/foam topper where each of us sleeps, and a bump in the middle… I actually find myself sleeping better after he’s gone to work as I can stretch out of my “groove” and even things out. >-<
A nice new mattress would be SWELL!

  • Diana Garza

We have a pretty amazing mattress! Only thing you can change to make it better is to put Johnny Depp in it!!

  • AlexaDT

I have some serious back problems, so a new mattress to replace my 10 yr old one would definitely help!

  • Robin Wilson

Due to severe Lupus, Fibro, joint issues, etc., I simply cannot get comfortable on our mattress. I have to sleep with 6 pillows to get propped in just “the position” to go to sleep. If I had a mattress with a foam or gel top it would be so much better.

  • raisingkayde

My mattress was given to me and it’s hard… I hate firm mattresses. A new SOFT one would be a dream!

  • Nycki Patterson

I’m allergic to EVERYTHING, including my old mattress! And new one would sooth my stuffy nose and calm my awful morning cough 🙂

  • Nicole

We have a dip on our mattress that’s is getting uncomfortable. My neck gets stiff from weird positioning during sleep.

  • Katie D

My problem is definitely that my mattress is not big enough. I sleep on a twin, and while it’s long enough, it’s definitely NOT enough space. I end up waking up with a lot of pain in my shoulders, neck, and back from being forced onto a too small mattress, but that’s all I could afford. A new, bigger mattress would definitely help me get a better night’s sleep and maybe I wouldn’t wake up in so much pain!

  • Melissa B

My sleep issue comes from the fact that my mattress is over 10 years old. It has several indentions that I fall into. I would love a new mattress that is firmer and also has more room for the pets to sleep in!

  • Boombutt

I have fibromyalgia and wake up hurting most mornings. I toss and turn like clothes in a washer. Before I got medication for a sleeping disorder I was in bed more than not. Over time the pressure my body has put on my mattress now has me sleeping in a fox hole. I am inches below my husband in bed it seems. Time for a new mattress but they aren’t cheap.

  • kim burnett

My sleeping trouble is that my mattress is too firm.

  • Jaclyn Reynolds

I have chronic insomnia and also cosleep with my toddler so nights are rough!

  • Elizabeth A

Temperature for sure. I’m always HOT because our mattress has foam and I swear that stuff traps heat and makes it feel like you’re sleeping on hot pavement. I need a new – foam free – mattress.

  • Brandi Young

I toss and turn and the blankets ball up around us and cause my body discomfort! The problem is we live in hot Phoenix and we get so warm at night and turn on fans but the mattress gets hot so that hot cold hot cold continues all night long. If I bought a new mattress I would probably get one with ability to heat and cool…

  • Adrienne W

I have a distinct divot in the spot where I sleep. If I move to another spot on the bed I end up right back in the divot. Needless to say my mattress is past it’s prime.

  • Christeen

My sleeping troubles are my little one sneaks in to our bed during the night. Maybe a more comfortable mattress in her room will help!

    • Brandi Young

ha ha! My sister complained her child wouldn’t sleep in his bed and when I visited I realized that is because her mattress was like an angel’s lair, memory foam and down filled pillows, while he had a pokey, sinking mattress and a pillow that was hard and thin as board. I thought no wonder he can’t sleep here.

  • iamalighthouse

I have trouble sleeping on my left side! It gets sore… 🙂 A new mattress would def. help. 🙂

  • Dawn P.

My mattress is 16 years old (I know, I know). We have a king sized bed so the good ones are very expensive and I need excellent support for my jacked up back. I wake up all crunchy sometimes with my lower back cracking when I get off the bed. I bet a new mattress would help with that.

  • Karen celiga

My kids climb into bed with me in the middle of the night. I need space!!!! At least in winter they keep me warm. Lol.

  • Kaitlin

I toss and turn a lot. A new matress would help a lot.

  • Riann

I always wake up with a kink in my neck – I hate that! I suppose that means I’m not sleeping on the right mattress – or that it is too old (10 years – yikes, right?)

  • Thaty Camila

I would sleep so much better If my side of the bed was always cool. Me and hubby have a fight everynight about the temperature of the room- he is always cold and I’m always hot.Maybe If only my side of the matress was cold we wouldn’t argue about that every night.

  • Stacey Mc

I have sleep apnea and snore, we need a larger mattress.

  • Kelly Commerford

Sometimes, I feel like Goldilocks & The Three Little Bears…because I’ve yet to find the right mattress for me- this one is too hard, this one is too soft, you get the picture. It is beyond frustrating because I am only 33, but have a chronic disc complex that is quite painful. A good night’s sleep would make me a happy girl!

  • Holly Moyseenko

I have several sleeping problems! The main is that I have a difficult time getting comfortable at night. I have some chronic health problems, and I know that my mattress is getting a little old (a friend of mine told me that you should replace your mattress every 10 years, and mine is right around there!). A comfortable, new mattress would hopefully be easier to fall asleep on.

  • Diana

Well I am a doctor so I usually sleep pretty well, but I always need more hours to sleep! I would love to have a mattress that stays cool at night because it does get hot with my boyfriend and sleeping together.

    • Brandy

hahaha. I called my husband and I told him I started sleeping on his (relatively pristine) side of the bed – he works out of state – and he was like nooooooooo, your sweaty little body will ruin my side!!! I get super hot when I sleep, I understand completely!

  • Jen

I have a hard time staying asleep- a new mattress that is super comfy would help with that.

  • Jessica Alipio

I still have the bed from high school – 18 years. I think a new bed is needed. My body impression is very evident!

  • Erin Hamm

My husband snores and tosses around, shaking my bed. I hope a new mattress would help with that,

  • ampidala

A new mattress would be the best gift anyone could give me! I toss and turn all night, plus my husband snores! Im sleepy!!

  • Vicky Bernia

I sleep better in my daughter’s recliner (when I’m babysitting) than in my own bed!

  • Kate

I had a really great mattress and then I got divorced. It wasn’t fully paid off and my ex decided if he was going to pay it off, he was going to keep it… So now I have some cheap thing that was in my brother’s guest room. We added a gel topper to it, but I still sink in the middle and sometimes I wake up sore because I’m pretty sure I haven’t moved all night.

  • Mary Happymommy (@mami2jcn)

My mattress is very lumpy and I can’t get comfortable. A new mattress would definitely help my back.

    mami2jcn at gmail dot com

  • latanya

I have back ache sometimes, so a firmer mattress would be helpful

  • Darby

I toss and turn-maybe a new mattress would keep me in place

  • Amanda Avila

I snore. It annoys my husband. Perhaps a new mattress would help with that!
