August Crafter’s Crate arrived earlier this week and my daughter immediately recognized the bright pink elephant on the box lid. She was so excited because she knew it was time for “activities” (what she calls crafts)! august crafters crate elephant

Crafter’s Crate is a subscription of crafts and activities for young girls, about 5-10 years old. Each month is themed and the boxes include art and craft activities with a little bit of kitchen and science mixed in!  When I opened this box I noticed right away that the bottom of the box was black!august crafters crate first look review
When I pulled out all the materials and realized that we were using the box as a solar cooker I literally squealed with delight. I just thought that was so awesome! I love it when boxes use the box in an integral way, and this was the best!august crafters crate review contents

One of the things I really like about Crafters Crate – and so does my daughter – is that she can follow along using the pictures! The picture directions are clear enough to follow along without using words. This is great even for kids that can read.

Crafters Crate August 2013 Review: Summer Memories

The theme for August was Summer Memories. The great thing about Crafters Crate is that it comes with all sorts of prompts for the parent/caregiver to extend the box beyond just crafting. In the August box I was encouraged to help my daughter remember positive memories, discuss goal-setting, and help prep for going back to school. august crafters crate review information card

Popsicle Frame

We dug right in on this fun project. There were a couple projects that used photos and of course we busted out our handy Groovebook! (Get your first free with code GROOVESPLURGE – it’s perfect for kids crafting!). I did need to help with this project as suggested and we had a fun time building it together. See the finished project below!

For this activity you cut out the drawn lines on the inside of the crafting paper and fold it up. I scored ours with a knife to make it easier to fold. I was encouraged to discuss goal setting and to have my daughter insert hers into the time capsule along with her summer doo-dads.IMG_9099 This is her goal – she explained it’s to be a good helper, and those are checkmarks, not LOL! What a cutie pie!IMG_9098

Solar Oven Smores

Obviously the kids were excited about this one! Who wouldn’t be? We discussed how we needed a sunny day to do this project (we had to wait for one), how the black bottom, plastic wrap, and aluminium foil help cook the smores, and then eat them! And yes, they were really all melty!

This project included supplies to make melted bead appliqués for two barrettes and a bookmark. I loved that it reinforced fine motor skills (even great for bigger kids, especially as we all type instead of write). She loved wearing barrettes that she made and I also got to take a turn (sorry, no selfie!).

This was definitely a huge hit. My daughter completed most of this project on her own (I cut out the photos). She selected all photos of herself, which I thought was cute. She spends a lot of time making books and photo albums and making a real book was a special activity for her.

This does look like a lot of fun. I also think those little time capsule wish boxes would make cute party/holiday favors or unique place settings for the holidays.

This box looks like a lot of fun. If only Madison was older. 🙁
