LitRx is a subscription box for book lovers, fangirls, and people who are in need of something new to read but “don’t really want to put on pants” to go to a bookstore. With fall weather finally showing up, I am super excited to get a new book to read without changing out of my jammies.

Similarly, LitRx notes that its monthly boxes deliver the remedy for book hangover (and even its box states!). What is book hangover, you ask? I’ll use LitRx’s definition: “It’s 4 am and you’ve just finished reading the last page of your book. You’ve got to go to work or school in just a few hours, but the remnants of the story have overtaken your thoughts. You can’t believe it’s over! And that’s when the book hangover kicks in.” Yep. Been there. Let’s see what the remedy for book hangover looks like!

Here’s a look at everything in this month’s box. According to LitRx, “every month you’ll receive a new-to-you book, a coordinating hand-crafted fragrance from Book Scents and 2-4 items inspired by the book and tailor-made for literary lovers.” I totally love how LitRx ran with the Halloween theme for October – a ghostly book, a spooky bag, a witch’s spell ornament, and an owl koozie? How fun is this!

Here is the front of October’s information card, providing this month’s theme (Haunted Hearts) and full-color photos of all of the items in the box.

The back of the information card lists the items included in the box and explains why the item relates to the book or the theme. I love how LitRx puts together a great set of themed items for each book! I’ve reviewed a few month’s worth of LitRx boxes so far and every month the items are so perfect for the theme and book – absolutely spot-on.

Ever by Jessa Russo ($11.99)

Seventeen-year-old Ever’s love life has been on hold for the past two years. She’s secretly in love with her best friend Frankie, and he’s completely oblivious. Of course, it doesn’t help that he’s dead, and waking up to his ghost every day has made moving on nearly impossible. Frustrated and desperate for something real, Ever finds herself falling for her hot new neighbor Toby. His relaxed confidence is irresistible, and not just Ever knows it. But falling for Toby comes with a price that throws Ever’s life into a whirlwind of chaos and drama. More than hearts are on the line, and more than Ever will suffer. Some girls lose their hearts to love. Some girls lose their minds. Ever Van Ruysdael could lose her soul.

Although I’ll read all sorts of genres, I’d have to say my least favorite type of book is romance. Of the genres I really like, I have a love-hate relationship with young adult…some YA books are fantastic but a lot are just kind of…meh. (I’m so over the cookie-cutter dystopian future romance novels. But hey, my daughters read them like crazy so I understand why authors keep writing them.) Although this novel sells itself as a YA romance, I started reading it with an open mind…after all, it has a spooky aspect (perfect for Halloween!). The main character of the story is in love with a ghost!

I’m not all the way through the book yet, but I will say, for the first time that I’ve gotten an LitRx box, I’m not loving the book. It’s fine – and I’m sure that it will appeal to a large chunk of readers…but it just isn’t to my liking. I’ll finish reading it – I don’t like letting a book go to waste. And I’ll pass it along to my daughters who will probably enjoy it more than I have. I am still a big fan of LitRx – after all, books are so personal, it just can’t be possible to please everyone all the time. And LitRx has sent me books I’ve loved up until this one – I’m sure the next one will be another great read!

BookScentsCandle Cotton Candy tin candle ($12.50): I love these book-inspired candles. However, this month’s candle…kind of like the book…was just not to my tastes. The candle smells exactly like cotton candy – as advertised. The scent, however, is just a little too overly sweet for me. I’m hoping, when the candle is lit, that the scent evens out a bit. Just like books, I’m not one to waste a candle!

Halloween Ornament ($12): This is a cute little ornament – the wreath is made of beeswax and the center is a cute print on fabric. I’ve never decorated for Halloween before, but this is so cute, I’m definitely hanging it up.

Owl Koozie ($5):  This is so adorable. I love the cartoon owl drawing on this koozie! And, of course, owls are perfect for the Halloween fun theme.

Tote Bag: I love everything about this bag. The cartoon print is adorable (and totally on theme). The bag is made of a nice heavy muslin/canvas and is big enough to actually hold stuff. (I was thinking of sending it trick-or-treating with my younger daughter, but then I remembered she usually collects about 80 pounds of candy, and I don’t want her to ruin this adorable bag!)

LitRx subscription boxes start at $40/month shipped, with discounts for multi-month subscriptions. I totally love the idea of this box, in part because I like reading books that I may not have picked for myself. Of course, occasionally that means the book won’t be to my liking – but that’s still fine. You don’t know what you like or don’t like until you try it, right? More than that, I love how LitRx includes the themed candle and other items that really bring the book to life! It makes reading more of a four-dimensional experience…so much fun!
