Mixology Monthly August 2016 unboxing

The glass jars were wrapped in bubblewrap and tissue, with everything else held in place by paper and careful placement.  There was just enough room for the 40 cm spoon!

Everything in the August 2016 box!

Besides tools and glassware, you’ll also get recipe cards and ingredients to make that perfect cocktail!  They included recipes for three drinks, each based on a different liquor.  I love that they don’t require any specialty liqueurs or exotic ingredients — other than the ones included in the box.

Bittercube Bolivar ($5.99):  Many classic cocktails require a dash or two of bitters, and switching up your bitters is an easy way to add some nuance to a drink.  Bittercube’s Bolivar combines Cassia cinnamon, chamomile, and fruit flavors to add balanced spicy and floral notes to your cocktail.  I found it to be a little more aromatic and have less of a root beer type flavor than angostura bitters.

Jack Rudy Cocktail Co. Elderflower Tonic ($13.51):  Elderflower is trending in the craft cocktail world, and you can only make so many drinks with St-Germain.  Enter Jack Rudy Cocktail Co.’s Elderflower Tonic.  Bitter Quinine tamps down the sweetness of the elderflower and sugar, making it suitable as an ingredient in a variety of cocktails.  It also has a bit of lemongrass and orange peel to round out the flavors.

Of course, it also makes a superb gin and tonic, and you only need regular soda water instead of tonic water.

Quince & Apple Citrus ($15.30):  I was thrown by the brand name and color, as this looks and sounds like cider.  It is actually a potent citrus mixer, useful as a sours substitute.

This syrup is balanced and has a plethora of flavor notes to accent any cocktail.  Combining simple syrup and flavorful acidity, it stands in place of fresh citrus juice or sours mix (plus simple syrup) if you are modifying a classic cocktail using one of those combos.

Mixology Monthly August 2016 (5)

A simple recipe is provided.  I’m sure this would work just as well with any variety of bitters.

Mixology Monthly August 2016 (8)

Viski MercerTM Copper Trident Barspoon ($10.99):  This gorgeous bar spoon measures a full 40 cm (15 3/4 in) in length!  It has a beautiful finish and features a bar spoon (slightly more narrow than a typical teaspoon) at one end, and a trident fork at the other.  The trident is useful for skewering garnishes, but I think it’s purpose is mainly to justify the extremely long, twisted handle.

Mixology Monthly August 2016 (9)

Viski MercerTM Copper Double Jigger ($15.99):  The copper finish on this jigger is even more lovely than that of the spoon!   This double-sided jigger pairs a 2 oz and 1 oz measure.

Mixology Monthly August 2016 (10)

This is a Japanese-style jigger, tall and sturdy, with the entire set represented in a single, double-sided device.

The two-ounce side has an internal 1 1/2 ounce line.

The finish is absolutely beautiful, a step above the typical stainless steel.

Mixology Monthly August 2016 (3)

Paloma Bolivar:  A tequila-based drink that is very refreshing.  I used Fresca as the grapefruit soda, but finding a small-batch sugar-based soda would likely make the drink even better.   We really liked this drink, and it has a wonderful pool-side feel to it.  The recipe calls for 2 1/2 ounces each of grapefruit soda and soda water, but I found that I preferred it with a few ounces of grapefruit soda and only a splash of soda water.

Mixology Monthly August 2016 (2)

Elderflower Sour:  This had a nice, light sour flavor, and the elderflower and citrus notes really came through.  The Quince & Apple Citrus combined with the Bolivar bitters was a great stand-in for common sours mix, as it didn’t have the corn syrup and cloying taste.  This recipe used vodka and 5 ounces of soda water to make a full size drink.  It is vodka-based and had a very light taste.  Cutting the soda down to 4 ounces and adding a full 2 ounces of vodka rendered a drink closer to the potent sours I’m used to.
Mixology Monthly August 2016 (1)

Each was very tasty and had a bar-standard 1 1/2 ounces of liquor each.  The Quince & Apple in each drink provided a nice rounded flavor profile along with the sweet and citrus, making them very palatable and broadly appealing.  I also loved that they were built on readily-available ingredients.

I like the concept of this subscription.  Many of us like mixed drinks, but we are untrained and have no idea what we need to set up a decent home bar.  This box gives you the professional gear and some high-end ingredients and know-how to get you started.
