Foodstirs August 2016 unboxing

The theme for August was Chocolate Chip Cookie Cake.  When the treats have a holiday theme, this subscription comes way in advance of the holiday, so you’ll have it not only in time to make for the holiday itself, but also in time for pre-holiday parties, if you like.  This was a simple, fun, anytime “cake.”

The box includes a card letting you know the ingredients needed, tools, baking time, quantity, etc.

I like that it breaks down the ingredients you need twice (the second time being what you need at home).  The kit includes all dry ingredients and decorative items — you supply eggs, butter, and other dairy when needed.  Most projects call for a stick of butter or so, and icings usually require some yogurt.

The information card also has useful tips written on it — usually there is a factoid and a couple of options for adding some extra flair or flavor to your creation.

The box includes complete nutritional and ingredients information. You will like the ingredients – never anything artificial, and the ingredients are primarily organic with only natural food dye.

The instructions. They are step by step with a photo for each step.  We’ve found them to be a bit awkward in the past (having you separate eggs only to recombine them, or chilling butter, making it difficult to blend), but this recipe was better-designed.  The frosting called for cold butter, presumably to make the final frosting thicker.  It only made it harder to blend, since it was warm by the time we frosted the cake anyway.  I would have preferred refrigerator for a few minutes after blending, instead.

The contents arrive nestled in squiggles – no more cloth bag!  This kit included a little nylon reusable spatula.

This project was particularly good for child involvement.  The kids helped with mixing the batter and the icing.  Once cooled, the baked cookies were also firm enough that the kids could ice them without tearing up the surface or “crumbing” the frosting.  And of course, they were more than happy to help with the sprinkles!

Brandy made this one and totally whiffed the instructions, putting in an entire stick of butter instead of 6 tablespoons. Whoops. We thought it was silly that the entire recipe called for 9 tablespoons – and wished they had been able to figure out how to use 1 stick for the entire shebang. Not that she would have gotten it right anyways.

The final product came out quite well.  The frosting was very soft, and I thought for a minute that the cake would slide apart, but it held (popping in the fridge helped), and the frosting oozed out of the seams just enough to give it a fun, cartoonish look.  As always, it tasted really good — my son said it was the best thing he had ever eaten!

The feedback on this subscription in the comments have been mixed – some people agree with us that the subscription is very pricey, others love it as a fun craft box for their kids.  They have lowered the price recently, settling on a more reasonable price point.  We do love the quality and taste of the mixes that form the base of each project , and you always get to eat the results!
