World Book Explorers is a monthly book club for children that sends books about the natural world to your home each month. They have three different levels: new explorers for kids in kindergarten through second grade, junior explorers for six through eight year olds and expert explorers for kids in sixth through eighth grades. This review covers their New Explorers subscription.

This subscription offers a free book to start your subscription – you pay $1 shipping and then you will be charged the regular subscription price ($29.99 shipped) in about 3 weeks.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS FOR THIS DEAL ( Please read comments to this post before signing up):You pay just $1.00 for shipping and handling. As a member of World Book New Explorers book program, you can expect to receive a new shipment of two books every four weeks. In addition, once each quarter, they’ll send you special products to preview, unless you opt out. They’ll provide you with at least 10 days notice before sending these out, giving you ample time to opt out. They’ll reimburse the cost of the book, less any shipping and handling charges that may apply.

IMG_6970Your first shipment of one book will arrive along with a booklet that describes each book club. After your introductory shipment, expect to pay $12.50 for each of two books along with $4.99 shipping and handling each month ($29.99 total each month).

IMG_6975We received “Nature’s Patterns” in our first shipment. This book is excellent!

IMG_6979It introduces young children to the layout of textbooks by including both a table of contents in the front and an index in the back.

IMG_6978In addition to the regular text of the book, it includes questions for reinforcement along with an answer key in the back of the book.

IMG_6977But it’s the book’s text and pictures that really shine! World Book has managed to condense and explain nature’s phenomena accurately and clearly using easy to understand language without talking down to children. Amazing! My son and I loved our first book! In it, we learned about tides, life cycles of forests, seasons, star movements and so many other natural cycles. Since first opening our package, we have returned to this book repeatedly. I can’t wait to see what lies in store for us as we continue to learn about the world around us with the help of World Book New Explorers!

Are you a member of one of the World Book Explorer clubs? What do you think about it?  You can try your first book for $1 shipped, but please note the terms & conditions for the offer!

They are the biggest scammers if a company and they are rude on the phone and are literally ruining my life to keep their company running and they have no understanding at all and I hope they’re company fails because they are complete scammers who I hope get sued.

I signed up for a $1 new trial, and they sent all 10 books at once. I now have to either send 8 back (2 are free) at my own expense, or they’ll charge my $35/month for the next three months. They said they’ll stop charging me as soon as the books are received at their warehouse – if not, I plan to talk to my bank about reversing the charges. Plus, my child didn’t even like the books!

I’d much rather subscribe to a company that sends a couple books at a time, rather than all at once, because now I’m out the shipping costs as well.

I am having the same problem,i sent for the trial book for 1. and they sent me 20 books. They will not respond to my emails and they keep charging me even after i canceled my bank card and received a new card. I also was to be receiving only 2 books a month 🙁

I just recently signed up for the trial. I got 2 books for $1.00. I received the books and really liked them. My son liked them too and we spent an hour going over Animals & Babies. They had basic information with large bright colorful pictures. In my opinion, I do not think 2 of these books would be worth $37.23 which is what my Welcome letter said I would be charged for next shipment. After seeing the price and reading the comments of people having issues of being charged when they weren’t supposed to, more books arriving than the agreement and trouble cancelling, I decided I better cancel before I am charged for my next shipment. I called the 1-888-316-0590 # on my welcome paper and told them I wanted to cancel. I also recorded the phone call and informed the person who took my call that I was doing so and they responded all their calls were recorded for security reason as well. I was asked why I wanted to cancel, if I had received the books, if I liked the books, if I would like more time to decided if I wanted to cancel. After answering each question my subscription was cancelled and I was told that I would receive an email conforming my cancellation and within 2 mins I received the email. I will see in couple weeks if I have charges but thinking this is the best process to take when cancelling your subscription.

This company is doing the exact same thing to my elderly relative- recurring charges, difficulty cancelling, etc. While the product itself may be decent, the tactics used by the company are shady at best, and seemingly predatory and evasive. I don’t think that providing a positive review of a company like this is a beneficial addition to your blog. Perhaps with your role as a reviewer and blogger, you could use your visibility to help influence their business practices and/or assist the people they are preying on.

I tried it, and while I enjoyed the first books, they charged me twice. When I saw the next set was a topic we didn’t want, I canceled using the online form. Then they sent me a $40 book set I didn’t ask for, so I emailed them and said that I was supposed to be canceled, and they charged me twice for the one I didn’t want, so I asked for a refund and to confirm the cancellation. They responded with “we’ll cancel you”.
Well, they didn’t cancel, no refund, and now they’ve sent me a third set of books I don’t need and charged me again.
When contacted, same exact form email about cancelling but no reference to the refund. I’m now $85 into unwanted books and charges AFTER my cancellation.
Worse – their tech sucks. My “my account” section shows no past orders, no saved cc info, etc., yet they are able to keep billing me.
So, while the first books we got were AMAZING – respiratory system and nervous system – my son spent 45 minutes intensely poring over every page – the company itself leaves a lot to be desired.
I will be contacting the NY AG and the BBB along with my bank in the morning if not resolved.
My advice – don’t sign up. Just buy the books you do want. Not worth the hassle. I only found this site because I was looking for other scam reports on the company. I can’t believe this is the “World Book” company we grew up with. Unreal.

Tiffany, Thanks so much for the helpful update! I’m so sorry to hear about your experience! It certainly is good to know though!
I’m glad you’re following up with the BBB, the NY AG and your bank, but I’m so sorry you’re having to go through all of this!

I’m sorry you’re having the same experience my relative is. It’s absolutely infuriating, the “sales” tactics they use and the lengths they go to, to make it difficult to cancel. Would you update if you’ve had any luck with cancelling your subscription? For my elderly relative on a very fixed income, this is beyond unacceptable. 🙁
