Comic Bento is a monthly comic book subscription service that delivers graphic novels and comics each month.  The books come from a multitude of different publishers and every month you’ll receive at least $60 in books.

Special care is given to each box.  To make keep the books from jostling about, Comic Bento uses air cushions and has all books packed together in plastic with cardboard to keep everything straight.

Four books, all from different publishers.  Comic Bento did well in bringing variety to their offering this month.

Comic Bento includes a 2-sided card that gives you some insight into the books they sent.  They also give some backstory as to why they chose the books within the subscription box. This month’s theme is REWRITING HISTORY!

119

This month has the “Rewriting History” theme.  Each book features a series that has time travel that takes things further than just checking things out back in time.  I’m a big fan of these types of scenarios.

121

X-Men: Days of Future Past – Marvel Comics – $19.99.  I was super excited when I saw this book at the top of the stack.  Chris Claremont and John Byrne are a comic book super-team that made this legendary storyline that was adapted into a film.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times: Relive the legendary first journey into the dystopian future of 2013 – where Sentinels stalk the Earth, and the X-Men are humanity’s only hope…until they die! Also featuring the first appearance of Alpha Flight, the return of the Wendigo, the history of the X-Men from Cyclops himself…and a demon for Christmas!? Collecting UNCANNY X-MEN (1963) #138-143 and X-MEN ANNUAL #4.

Mankind: The Story of All of Us: Volume 1 – Silver Dragon Books – $14.99.  I’m not quite sure how this book fits the theme.  There isn’t anyone going back to change things, as much as it is the History Channel telling stories from ancient times.

“MANKIND: The Story of All of Us Volume 1”. From the producers of America: The Story of Us comes the epic tale of the rise of civilization. The 12-hour series spans the first flourishing of civilization in Mesopotamia through the discovery of America. Groundbreaking production techniques bring to life the greatest landmarks and milestones of human achievement. CGI rebuilds lost worlds; large scale reenactments replay critical battles; innovative use of interactive maps dynamically illustrates the key factors that gave rise to civilization across the globe. MANKIND: The Story of All of Us emphasizes the simultaneity of the human adventure — how ancient Egypt thrived while Stonehenge was being built; China was at its zenith while Europe was plunged into the Dark Ages. HISTORY captures the danger, action, struggle, heroism, and adrenaline of MANKIND: The Story of All of Us!

Chronos Commandos: Dawn Patrol – Titan Comics – $14.99.  Nazis who can travel in time and the individuals who are out to stop them.  The art in this book is painted and looks absolutely spectacular.  It’s very fitting for the story.

When the Allies and Nazis develop time-diving technology that could see the course of the Second World War derailed by creatures from the Cretaceous, only the Sarge and his band of misfit soldiers can save the future – by saving history!

Dinosaurs! Giant crocodiles! Time travel! Nazis! Albert Einstein with a machinegun! All that barely scratches the surface of this astounding, fully-painted pulp spectacular!

132Ivar, Timewalker: Volume 1: Making History – Valiant Comics – $9.99.  This comic book is from the team of Fred Van Lente, Clayton Henry and Brian Reber.  The art looks great and the story spans across time.

  • From the dawn of the dinosaurs…to the Battle of Trafalgar…to the end of time itself…the first century-spanning adventure of Ivar, Timewalker starts here!
  • At this very moment in Geneva, Switzerland, history is being made. A thousand meters underground inside the Large Hadron Collider, researcher Neela Sethi is about to discover time travel — and jeopardize her life in the process. But she doesn’t know that yet. Ten minutes from now, every deadbeat chrononaut, wannabe conqueror, and misguided protector of the timestream will be banging down her door. Good thing that the legendary Ivar, Timewalker, got there first… right? Now it’s down to history’s most jaded, most tempestuous time traveler to stop the worst of everything that is, was, and will be… before time runs out!
  • New York Times best-selling creators Fred Van Lente (Archer & Armstrong, Amazing Spider-Man) and Clayton Henry (Harbinger, Incredible Hercules) begin a clock-stopping odyssey into the distant past, far future, and every moment in between right here with the first volume of Valiant’s latest epic — intro-priced at just $9.99 for new readers!

Comic Bento is such an awesome value!  All four of these books were packaged so well together and arrived in spectacular condition.  As stated earlier, there is a theme but there’s also a ton of variety, and the theming of this box is pretty unique amongst comic subscriptions. The curator’s notes really bring the theme together, and that made this box even more awesome!
