foodstirs febuary 2016 box
Foodstirs is a new monthly baking subscription box created by Sarah Michelle Gellar. Every month you’ll receive family-oriented baking kits made with premium and real ingredients, free of preservatives, artificial dyes and flavors. The mixes use organic and non-GMO ingredients when available.  You can also choose to subscribe monthly to their sugar cookie, brownie, or vanilla cupcake mix. You can choose to get the monthly kit or start your subscription with one of the kits in the store.

The theme for February was Cake Pop.  The green sprinkles made these perfect to hang on to for a St. Patrick’s Day.  When the treats have a holiday theme, this subscription comes in plenty of time to make a seasonal treat before the holiday.

The box includes a card letting you know the ingredients needed, tools, baking time, quantity, etc.  I liked that it broke down the ingredients you need twice (the second time being what you need at home).   The kit includes all dry ingredients and decotrative items — you supply eggs, butter, and other dairy when needed.  The box also includes a crafting tip, a fact, and a culinary tip.  I did have to chuckle upon seeing the fact provided — I thought saying that cake pops were the most popular dessert in 2011 was a bit like complemented someone on their outfit being the epitome of style… five years ago!  For the past 3 months the tip has been a tablespoon to teaspoon conversion.  All you need to know is that there are 3 teaspoons in one tablespoon – a different multiple each month doesn’t change the math…

The instructions. They are step by step with a photo for each step.  We’ve found them to be a bit awkward in the past (having you separate eggs only to recombine them, or chilling butter , making it difficult to blend), but this recipe was well-designed and worked perfectly as written.  Nutrition information is provided for each ingredient included in the kit instead of the final product.

Each bag is labeled, though it’s fairly easy to tell what the contents are through the bag.

We were able to make 20 pops out of the kit, with some frosting and chocolate left over.  I used this kit to test the top-only baking function on our new dual oven, and I went a tad dark on the top of the cake, having to trim a bit off the top — we likely could have gotten four more pops out of the kit had I baked more tentatively.

I was really impressed with this particular edition of Foodstirs.  The pops tasted great, and the recipe was simple to follow.  The frosting bound the pops together, and the chocolate coating kept them moist.   Using chocolate to hold in the sticks worked exceptionally well.

The kids loved the pops, with my youngest stealing two at a time!

This month was the best box we’ve seen from this subscription (see our Foodstirs Reviews for previous fails).  Foodstirs is one of the lowest value subscription boxes we’ve seen, but this month was higher value. Plus, this recipe turned out much, much better than our previous ones, but it is still a bit expensive — over a buck a pop — for something made at home with your own butter, etc.    If you’d like to try it out we’re happy to enter your information so you can get a $10 coupon – just fill out the information in this form.

Yay for a good box. I love SMG so I was hoping this box would turn for the better. Here’s hoping that it keeps up.
