Baker’s Krate is a Canadian subscription that sends you a box of delicious desserts once a month. The bakeries featured are all Canadian and local! This unassuming cardboard box showed up when I wasn’t home, and when I got the delivery notice and realised what it was, I shamelessly begged the girls at my post office (who know me a bit too well from all my packages) to rifle around in the back room so I didn’t have to wait to pick up the next day. That’s how seriously I take my sweets.

The first look revealed that darn cute wooden fork I see in other reviews, and a lot of red and white. Everyone’s all about love this month, and honestly I think I have the advantage being single — I’m not expected to share anything!

The box has a cardboard separator to keep things from clunking around, and there’s liberal amounts of (pink!) bubble wrap. Baker’s Krate often includes a cake in a jar, so protecting that heavy glass is definitely appreciated!

February’s box includes six items from four different bakeries in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Not pictured is the ingredients list they also include, which reminds me I am allergic to absolutely everything in this box due to a gluten sensitivity, but am choosing to ignore because chocolate. I really appreciate the ‘best before’ dates, although if they seriously think I’m going to make it to February 29th without trying everything, they have more faith in my willpower than I do!

Mini Heart Shaped Imperials (High Tea Bakery) I’m breaking out my grandma’s china for this review. This is a jam-filled cookie with an almond glaze. The texture of the cookie — not quite a shortbread but very soft — and the jam reminded me of something I couldn’t quite put my finger on. I took the second cookie to work for my coworker, Ashley, who has been living vicariously through my subscription box adventures. She described it as, and I quote, ‘a fancy poptart.’ Nailed it.

Heart Sugar Cookie (High Tea Bakery)  This classic sugar cookie was so beautifully decorated, it was almost too pretty to eat. The cookie is a classic sugar cookie recipe — not too soft, not too crunchy. The icing is royal icing but it isn’t overly sweet.

Chocolate & Red Velvet Cakettes (Cake-ology) Deluxe cake balls! These are very generously sized and are slathered in icing. I found the chocolate cake center to be a bit more dry and dense than the red velvet cake, but it was still delicious.

White Chocolate Roll Cake in Jar (Rolle Cake Bakery) This was hard to photograph accurately, and not just because I was halfway through eating it when I realised I hadn’t actually photographed it yet. Oops. Hazard of the job! This was a very moist red velvet cake layered with a lot of white chocolate icing. There was probably more icing than cake, but it was light and fluffy and ridiculously sweet! You can see the layers in the last photo!

Chocolate Caramel Delight (Goodies Bake Shop) Shortbread on the bottom, caramel in the middle, and chocolate icing on the top. This may have been what put me over and into a sugar coma, because this was so incredibly sweet. The caramel was a real, rich caramel, not the synthetic-tasting caramel you often find in chocolate bars or candy. Absolutely delicious, but I couldn’t finish it!

I’m serious about anything dessert, and this box definitely delivered – no pun intended.
