bocandy september 2015 box
Bocandy is a a monthly candy & snack subscription sending 7-10 different types of candy from around the world straight to your door! Bocandy offers a half off first box trial with coupon code HELLO so if you’re interested in this type of subscription, it’s a great way to check this one out, plus they’re now offering lower prices for longer term subscriptions.  Don’t look for a cohesive theme (though the info card will occasionally wax philosophical) — Bocandy tends to be a grab bag of candy favorites.

bocandy september 2015 unboxing

The box is always a big jumble, but it holds several giant handfuls of goodies.  Looks like Bocandy is still finding great Bulgarian candy bars and was able to get ahold of some rare Japanese versions of US bars, too!

The info sheet has some background on each item, as well as a ballpark figure on the retail value — I’m not sure if this is a conversion of purchase price in country of origin, cost of purchase from specialty stores stateside, or if it is derived from allocating shipping costs to direct purchases.  This month is all imported items, so I can see why the prices are a little higher than US retail for similar candy..

bocandy september 2015 reviewEverything in the September Box!  The box is fairly petite, but it arrives full to the top with treats.

TOMY El Clasico (Mexico):  hard candies with a great, clean, butterscotch flavor.  These have been popular in Mexico for a very log time.

Balkan Kakao Cake Bar (Bulgaria) – BOCANDY EXCLUSIVE:  Bocandy has been including a great Bulgarian candy find in each month’s box.  It hasn’t been part of a stated theme, but this is the third or fourth box in a row.  Each time has been a different bar, so I certainly haven’t minded.  This is a yellow cake with chocolate cream center and chocolate flavored icing.  It is much like similar Hostess or Little Debbie offerings, but the cake and icing are more delicate than the aforementioned cakes.  The cake is definitely the centerpiece, as the chocolate elements are thin in comparison.

Cheesecake Kit Kat (Japan) – BOCANDY EXCLUSIVE:  These are legendary — Kit Kat makes several flavors for the Japanese market that are not sold stateside.  Some, like edamame, baked potato, and miso, are not really missed here.  This cheesecake variety, however, is highly prized and near impossible to find in the US.  It has a rich cheesecake flavor and a nice creamy texture to match.  I detected a bit of lemon in it, as well.  Being a big fan of white chocolate, cheesecake, and similar unchocolates, I loved this item.

Daim Double (Sweden):  If I recall my candy history properly, Daim is the result of the Hershey Company refusing to license Heath bars in the Swedish market, forcing a Swedish company to make its own version.  The result was a darker, more flavorful toffee which was so popular that Hershey imitated it by creating Skol.  This is a big double bar of the dark toffee — and the chocolate is very tasty and thick, rivaling the chocolate coating on any big name bar.

Cactus Lakerol (Sweden via Slovakia):  Truly bizarre.  Swedes like salted, hardcore licorice, so it’s no surprise that this is similarly intense.  It is like a combo of mint and licorice, with the cactus being a minor flavor note.  Very intense — this may be best reserved for licorice lovers.

Orion Mini Cola (Japan):  The Japanese have a love affair with soda candies, and, truthfully, they are probably lower-sugar options than the soda itself.  This one is obviously attempting to mimic Coca-Cola.  The taste is a good approximation of cola, and it has the little bit of tartness that seems to be a staple in all soda-flavored candies.  Other than the cola flavor, the overall feel is much like a ramune candy or Smarty.

BONUS Leftovers:  Each box this month had a big handful of some extra candy from a previous box.  We received a couple strips of Zotz, the Italian, sour raspberry fizzy candy.

Bocandy is a good all-around candy subscription.  There is no theme or geographic anchor, so you never know what you will get.  Past boxes have each had an assortment of bar candies, hard candies, and mint/gum-type candies.
