artbotic august 2015 box

Artbotic [art-baht-ick or art-bo-tique?] grabs some of the best finds from the emerging art scene and ships them to you on a quarterly basis.  Limited edition prints signed by the artist come complete with a certificate of authenticity, and the box includes some other fun goodies to help you make cool art of your own, or at least look cool trying. Not your grandma’s art!

Albert hand-packed our box — each item was wrapped in protective film and carefully nestled in the box.

For $65 a box ($60 for your first box, with coupon code), you get a lot of value.  It’s hard to price limited edition works, but the prices for the art are consistent with what I would expect to see for signed, limited run prints at a brick and mortar art store, and the glasses and lenses are ascribed a value that is downright cheap.  With these modest valuations, the total value is $162.  The value still exceeds the subscription price if the art is valued at half the estimated price!

Almost everything in the box.  There is some valuable stuff tucked in that tube.

The non-art items are pretty cool, too.  The photography lens kit clips gently on just about any smartphone or tablet (I think It would work on any device less than 3/8″ thick with a 1/4″ diameter lens that is within an inch of the edge of the device — all measurements being best guesses on my part).  It has a fish eye lens and a macro lens, plus a wide angle lens that fits atop the macro, giving you three distinct aspects.    The Gamma Ray Cheaters are a handsome pair of glasses — they have a classic 70’s “birth control goggles” frame, updated with some contour and a tortoise shell pattern (mottled brown and dark tan).  The lenses are polarized UV 400 with a silver mirrored finish.

This quarter’s tee is ThatSoDope original, from a limited run of 100.  The all cotton tee is sure to grab some comments. The shirts are printed on Gildan Softstyle blanks – Gildan quality but softer than the normal heavy ones. Very nice.

The limited run (100 minted) pin is a port of one of Emilio Ramos’ most iconic designs.

Andy Eveland designed the robot graphic featured on the box.  A few stickers of the logo design are included — the one that is trimmed around the design is slightly puffy.

The first limited edition print is “Happy Day” by Nicanor Aquino VII.  It is no 47/100 and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.  It is a print, not the original painting, but the limited run and signature means it does have the potential to increase greatly in value as the artist gains further acclaim.  Regardless of value, this is a fun mash-up of cultural touchstones.

The second print is “Head Bone” by Ryan Spahr.  The original work is made with wide markers, and it is amazing to see them applied in the same way oil paint would be applied to a canvas.  This print is 47/100 and signed by the artist with an accompanying certificate of authenticity.

A close-up of the print numbering, signatures, and certs. All of their prints are on high quality 310gsm Fine Art Paper with Archival inks.

This is a unique subscription, and I like what I’ve seen in this first batch.  There are many subscriptions that offer home decor and craft items for decorating, but most are mass produced or found pieces.  Artbotic provides actual art that you’ll want to matte and frame.  The limited run concept is very cool.  It works because they feature artists that are just starting to make a name for themselves — more established artists would fetch a huge price for a limited run of 100, or the number of prints would be so astronomical as to render each individual one valueless.  With Artbotic, you get some fun (that’s the important part) REAL art that has the added conceit that it might, possible, accrete in value over time.  I think they found a very justifiable price point, as well, given the number of limited run pieces included (and the decent quality of the add-in items, despite the relatively cheap value ascribed to them).  Very cool.
