Birchbox Man Subscription Box Review & Coupon – July 2015

The July 2015 Birchbox Man theme was Summer Epic and was designed to give you an epic summer season. Birchbox Man is a monthly grooming and lifestyle subscription for men. You’ll receive 3-4 samples, plus a lifestyle item. Boxes are $20 per month and you’ll earn points for reviewing the items in the box. You can earn 110 points ($11 in the shop) for picking up a yearly subscription.

We’re all for lounging in the afternoon shade, but summer also inspires us to seize the day. Whether your idea of an epic feat is roasting a whole pig on a spit, screening Ben-Hur on your backyard projector, or kicking back in your Adirondack chair with a copy of The Odyssey, here’s to a summer full of thrilling heroics.

Everything in my box this month. By now I think everyone’s noticed that Birchbox has cut back the number of samples in this box.  The three brands represented are BB regulars, so it is not a quantity for quality swap, just a reduction in number.  And size.

Jack Black Supreme Cream Triple Cushion Shave Lather ($1.50):  Shimmering silvery white, Supreme Creme has a light, neutral scent.  It’s not particularly slippery, and it lathers like a soap to lubricate.

Baxter of California Clay Pomade ($1.70):  You can feel the wax in the composition, as it adds a slight tack (but is not sticky).  Applying to your hair feels a bit like putting rosin on a bow (musical, not hunting) and has the same pleasant grip to it.  the “matte” finish actually has a nice lustre to it.  I particularly like the scent — it has some nice deep licorice and menthol tones under the warm beeswax.

Billy Jealousy Triple Crown 3-in-1 Body Wash ($2.50):  I’ve never seen this particular combo before, but the Billy Jealousy products are generally good.  Feels a bit like face moisturizer going on, so I’m curious to see how effective it is as a wash.

Profound Aesthetic Genuine Raw Leather Journal: Pocket Size ($32):  Deep chocolate brown and made of pliable, pebbled leather, with a wrap to hold it closed.  “PROFOUND” is stamped along the edge of the flap.

The inside of the cover is rawhide.  The booklet is bound separate from the cover and is a light manila color.

The binding is quite simple.  With an awl and half a foot of waxed string, you can insert a replacement booklet quite easily.

The value of my box this month was around $37.70 – $32 for the journal plus $5.70 in products. Not as bad as some of the other boxes this month, but it’s clear that Birchbox has epically reduced the value of Birchbox Man. I like that I get to pick a product, but if I had to choose just one box, it would be Bespoke Post. I think Birchbox needs to decide whether it wants to be a sample box or a lifestyle box.
