No matching algorithms, no snooty wine, just awesomeness. I’m not a lush, but this is one of my favorite subscriptions personally, because of its low-key, accessible approach to wine and wine education. In fact, there’s a reference in April’s mini-mag to drinking wine out of cans, solo cups and mugs! Wine Awesomeness is a wine club that’s sort of like a subscription box  – the wines are really well curated around a cool theme.

You’ll get 3 (or 6, depending on your choice) wines every month or every quarter, depending on how often you’d like to receive it. The 3 bottle box costs $45, and the 6 bottle box is $75. Currently I’m subscribed to the 3 bottle white (which includes sparkling and rosé) Wine Awesomeness Discovery Box. It’s totally awesome.

The April Theme was Golden Oldies – the grapes that have ruled the wine scene forever (and with good reason!). Every month you don’t just get 3 “really good” bottles of wine, you got 3 really good bottles curated around a specific theme along with an introduction to the theme, very readable educational materials about all the grapes in this region or the theme, and page by page introductions to each wine.

This is such a great, accessible mini-mag. This is my favorite wine subscription, hands down. I thought an article on terroir was an excellent idea – it’s the concept that unique regional differences are expressed through the grapes (and concentrated in wine). It’s what makes wine so interesting!

wine information

Each wine information page includes the following:

  • Wine Name
  • Grape
  • Location
  • What you should do while drinking this wine (many tongue in cheek)
  • What to eat with the wine
  • What to listen to while you drink the wine
  • Description
  • Wine Bouquet
  • Tasting Notes
  • Recipe

Not only was this super informational, it helps you learn about wine in a really low key way if you don’t know a lot about it besides “I like wine.” I do enjoy all types of wine and have taken some great wine tasting classes but I do usually revert to an “I like wine” state.

2012 Dr. Pauly-Bergweiler Riesling Trocken: This was an amazing beverage! I love a dry riesling and like the booklet said, it was “brimming with nectarine, yellow plum, and key lime,” while remaining nice and dry.

2011 La Sauvignon Touraine: Citrusy & grassy, this was reminiscent of grapefruit, and was very minerally.  I could totally see myself hauling this one around the French countryside!

IMG_20492013 Lorenzo Constantini Frascati Superiore Borgo Del Cedro: This was delicious and I really don’t think I’ve had Frascati (a sauvignon blanc) before.  It seems that it’s a popular table grape and everyone drinks it, because it’s delicious. This was a fruity not too dry sort of wine that you could drink anytime, anywhere!

The Wine Awesomeness approach to wine is so fun, and it really helps me make my selections for my mood! The first box offer is awesome to see if you like it, and the monthly ongoing price is really affordable. FYI, I suggest picking Eastern Bloc Party as your first box if it’s still available – you can read that review here! We are going to expand our subscription to the 6-bottle pack. It’s time to show the reds some love but… I cannot give up my whites (my tastes have changed in the past ten years from big reds all the time to fun happy whites).
