Starbucks Reserve Roastery is an exclusive coffee subscription box from Starbucks. Each month, one rare, small-lot coffee is selected by their experts, roasted in Seattle then delivered fresh to you within days.

Timing:

  • Ordered February 26
  • Received separate order confirmation March 5
  • Notified it was shipping on March 9. It was finally delivered March 16 by FedEx Ground.

I honestly didn’t feel that for $24 for a half pound of coffee that is lauded to arrive within days that an entire week was acceptable. There are better, less expensive, and speedier coffee subscriptions.

Starbucks tasting notes:

Sip the beauty of Brazil in this naturally processed, uniquely sweet coffee with wine-like complexity.

This coffee comes from 74 small holder farms in Nova Resende, a small town in the South of Minas Gerais, where it was selected for its unique flavor and quality. Grown in partial shade, the beans slowly mature and retain more of their sugars before being naturally dried, creating a unique complexity and fruit notes typically associated with full-bodied red wines.

My Tasting Notes:

I couldn’t discern a noticeable difference from the standard Starbucks coffees served in-store.  This made a good cup of coffee and had a predictable profile.  It was medium-dark roasted and exhibited the standard, subtle flavor notes of a classic-profiled coffee: caramel, plum and dried fig. It didn’t have the buoyant and exotic profiles I’ve found in offerings from other coffee clubs.  Again, it was very enjoyable, it’s just not paradigm-shifting and may not merit the price tag.
