The box includes step-by-step instructions and everything you need to complete the project.

From forming a sturdy frame to painting the finished sculpture, Doodle Crate walks you through the entire project.  The instructions include some helpful pointers for avoiding pitfalls — for instance this box cautioned to construct the arms of your figurine separate from the main wire support to maintain stability.  You are free to get creative, but don’t need to worry about getting lost.  This project was pretty straightforward, but the instructions are clear enough to get your child safely through even the more complicated projects (like the braiding and weaving boxes).

Some great extension ideas were included with the instructions. Kids can expand on what they’ve learned and try it out with new materials.    The Sculpting box encouraged exploration with various materials, from sand sculpting to found object sculpting.  This aspect of the box is great, as it creates the opportunity to develop a much more comprehensive understanding of the genre and perhaps discovery of a lifelong passion.

We missed taking a photo of the wire base, which our daughter completed on her own.

My daughter is 6 and this box is geared for 9+. She was able to complete this project with assistance and she loved it.  Older kids could certainly dive into this project and create some pretty intricate sculpture.  For painting and sculpting, this was a fairly clean project, too, and no need for a kiln or specialty supplies!
